A theatre and literature festival each October honouring the poet Heinrich von Kleist, born in Frankfurt (Oder), with performances, readings and concerts.
Frankfurt (Oder) is situated in eastern Brandenburg, directly on the border with Poland, and has a storied history as a Hanseatic city and academic center. Founded in 1253, the city rapidly evolved into a vital trade hub due to its strategic position on the Oder River. The establishment of the Viadrina University in 1506 made Frankfurt a prominent intellectual beacon, where luminaries such as Ulrich von Hutten and Wilhelm von Humboldt studied. A standout architectural monument is the Gothic St. Mary's Church, renowned for its magnificent 14th-century stained-glass choir windows. As the birthplace of Heinrich von Kleist, the city preserves his literary legacy through the Kleist Museum. Following extensive destruction during World War II, Frankfurt was rebuilt and now forms a unique 'double city' with its Polish neighbor Słubice, symbolizing deep cross-border cooperation. Today’s European University Viadrina continues this academic tradition, fostering dialogue between Eastern and Western Europe. The surrounding Oder valley also provides scenic landscapes for outdoor recreation.
