Nuremberg Trials – Palace of Justice (Germany)

Weather…

The Palace of Justice in Nuremberg was the historic site of the Nuremberg Trials, where, between 1945 and 1946, the major war criminals of the National Socialist regime were held accountable before an International Military Tribunal. These trials are regarded as the birthplace of modern international criminal law, as state leaders were for the first time held individually responsible for crimes against humanity and the initiation of a war of aggression. The famous Courtroom 600, where the proceedings took place, remained an active courtroom until recently and is now part of the Memorium Nuremberg Trials. The building was chosen for the trials due to its sheer size and the fact that it remained largely undamaged during the war, while the adjacent prison provided secure housing for the defendants. Prosecutors from the four Allied powers presented vast amounts of evidence documenting the atrocities of the Holocaust and Nazi aggression. Today, a permanent exhibition provides detailed information on the legal proceedings, the defendants, and the global legacy of the verdicts. A visit provides deep insight into the efforts to establish a new international legal order following the horrors of the war.
