Hallertau Hop Growing Region (Germany)

Weather…

The Hallertau in Bavaria is the world's largest contiguous hop-growing region, spanning parts of Upper and Lower Bavaria. Covering an area of approximately 178 square kilometers, it produces about 80 percent of Germany's hops. The cultivation of the plant in this region has a tradition spanning over a millennium, with documentation dating back to the 8th century. The landscape is defined by hop gardens reaching heights of up to seven meters, supported by characteristic wire frames. The annual harvest in September is a pivotal event for the local economy and culture. In 2006, Hallertau hops received the EU protected designation of origin (PDO) status. Beyond agriculture, the region is a global center for research and development of hop varieties. The German Hop Museum in Wolnzach archives the history and techniques of cultivation. The soil composition and climate of the Hallertau provide the convenient conditions for the growth of this demanding plant.
