Alps – Chamois (Germany)

Weather…

The Alpine chamois (Rupicapra rupicapra) is a distinctive inhabitant of high mountain regions, perfectly adapted to life in steep and rocky terrain. These bovids are characterized by their short, hook-shaped horns, which are present in both males and females and are used for defense and social signaling. During the summer months, they often retreat to high altitudes of up to 3,600 meters, while in winter, they seek refuge in forested areas at lower elevations to find food. They typically live in herds composed of females and their young, while adult males remain solitary for most of the year outside the mating season. Their hooves are uniquely designed with hard outer edges and soft inner pads, providing exceptional grip on slippery rocks and icy slopes. In the 19th century, the chamois population was severely threatened by overhunting, but strictly enforced conservation laws have allowed the species to recover across the Alps. Today, they are essential to the mountain ecosystem and serve as a prominent symbol of alpine biodiversity.
