The Genale River is one of the most significant waterways in southeastern Ethiopia, originating in the mountains of Bale and Sidamo. It flows for hundreds of kilometers through deep canyons and arid savannah landscapes before joining the Dawa River at the Somali border to form the Jubba River. With a total length of approximately 858 kilometers within Ethiopia, the river plays a vital role in water supply and agriculture for the region's inhabitants. Its economic importance has surged in recent years due to large-scale hydroelectric projects, most notably the Genale Dawa III dam. This facility generates substantial electricity for the national grid and helps regulate water flow for downstream irrigation. The river's course is ecologically diverse, hosting crocodiles and various fish species in its deeper sections. Historically, the Genale has functioned as a cultural and administrative boundary between different ethnic groups in the southern highlands and remains a lifeline for pastoralist communities.
