The Bale Mountains in southeastern Ethiopia host one of Africa's most unique alpine landscapes, protected within the Bale Mountains National Park. Spanning 2,200 square kilometers, the park includes Mount Tullu Dimtu, which at 4,377 meters is one of the highest peaks in the country. A highlight is the Sanetti Plateau, the largest continuous Afro-alpine moorland on the continent, situated at an altitude above 4,000 meters. This area is the primary stronghold of the Ethiopian wolf, the world's rarest canid, with only a few hundred individuals remaining. The southern reaches of the mountains are covered by the Harenna Forest, Ethiopia's second-largest tropical forest, known for its mist-shrouded trees and wild coffee. The park is a global hotspot for endemism; many species, such as the Mountain Nyala and the Bale Monkey, are found nowhere else on Earth. Its dramatic cliffs, glacial lakes, and sweeping valleys make it a premier destination for trekkers and naturalists.
