Tulu Dimtu (Ethiopia)

Weather…

Tulu Dimtu is the second-highest peak in Ethiopia, reaching an altitude of 4,377 meters in the Bale Mountains of the southeast. It rises from the Sanetti Plateau, the largest continuous Afro-alpine plateau in Africa, which is a landscape of moorlands and volcanic rock. Unlike the jagged peaks of the Simien Mountains, Tulu Dimtu has a more rounded, dome-like appearance due to long-term weathering of its volcanic basalt and trachyte rocks. The mountain is notably accessible via one of the highest all-weather roads on the continent, allowing visitors to reach near the summit by vehicle. This area is world-renowned as the stronghold of the Ethiopian wolf, the world's rarest canid, which hunts the abundant giant mole-rats found here. The vegetation is characterized by giant lobelias and heather, adapted to extreme diurnal temperature swings and high UV radiation. Tulu Dimtu also serves as a critical water tower for the arid lowlands of Ethiopia and Somalia, feeding several major river systems.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
The mountain is located in the Bale Mountains National Park and is reached via a gravel road crossing the Sanetti Plateau. This is one of Africa's highest all-weather roads, reaching nearly to the summit.
📅
Best season
The best time to visit is during the dry season from November to March. Views are clearest then, although at this high altitude it remains very cold during the day and frost is common throughout the year.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The terrain on the summit and the surrounding Sanetti Plateau is afro-alpine moorland featuring heather and lichens. Paths are mostly firm but can become boggy in lower sections following heavy rainfall.
🎒
What to bring
Warm, windproof layering is essential due to the extreme altitude and chilling winds. Sturdy hiking boots, high-SPF sunscreen, and sunglasses are vital because of the intense high-altitude UV radiation.
🅿️
Parking
Parking is available at designated spots along the Sanetti Plateau road or at the national park headquarters in Dinsho. Vehicles can often stop briefly at the roadside very close to the actual summit.
⚠️
Safety
Monitor yourself for symptoms of altitude sickness as the summit exceeds 4300 meters. Weather changes can be extremely rapid, with sudden fog or snow showers severely limiting visibility on the plateau.
⏱️
Time needed
As the summit is accessible by car, a visit can take as little as 1-2 hours. However, for hiking on the plateau or wildlife spotting (like the Ethiopian wolf), you should plan for a full day's excursion.
