San Diego Beach is one of the longest and most popular stretches of coastline in the La Libertad department. Extending over more than 7 kilometers, it is characterized by fine gray volcanic sand and flat topography. Unlike many of the rocky surf beaches in the vicinity, San Diego is good for long walks and traditional beach activities. The surf can be strong here, making it a favorite spot for experienced surfers as well. Along the shoreline, there are numerous private villas, small hotels, and restaurants serving fresh seafood. A significant ecological feature is the nearby estuary, which serves as a habitat for various bird species and fish. Due to its proximity to the capital, San Salvador (about a 40-minute drive), San Diego is a preferred weekend getaway for locals. In recent years, conservation efforts for sea turtles nesting on this beach have been significantly increased.

The best time for birdwatching at San Diego Beach is the dry season from November to April, when migratory birds stop over. The wet season (May to October) brings a quieter coast but lower bird diversity.

Early morning is when birds are most active feeding, especially around the dunes. Late afternoon is also rewarding as coastal birds come in to roost.

Keep distance from nesting birds and avoid stepping on dune vegetation. Feeding wildlife is not allowed, and dogs must be leashed to avoid disturbing breeding.

A good pair of binoculars (8x or 10x) is essential for spotting birds in the dunes and along the shore. Sturdy footwear and sun protection are important due to the sand and strong sun.

Getting there

San Diego Beach is located on El Salvador's Pacific coast, about an hour from San Miguel. Access is via a dirt road; a 4x4 vehicle is recommended during the rainy season.

Shorebirds are skittish - sit quietly in a sheltered spot and wait for them to come closer. It may take 20-30 minutes for the animals to resume normal behavior.
