Tamboril is an industrially focused municipality in the Santiago province, having gained worldwide fame for its cigar production. Located at the foot of the Cordillera Septentrional, the town benefits from fertile surrounding land that has been used for tobacco cultivation for over a century. Tamboril is home to numerous free trade zones (Zonas Francas), where thousands of workers manufacture millions of cigars for export, particularly to the US and Europe. The municipality was officially founded in 1900 under the name Peña, before being renamed Tamboril to solidify its independent identity. In addition to tobacco, the region is also notable for its significant amber mines, where high-quality blue amber is extracted. Geographically, Tamboril borders the city of Santiago de los Caballeros and forms an integral part of the metropolitan economic region. Despite its industrial focus, the town has preserved its traditional charm, reflected in local festivals and the architecture of the old town. The combination of agro-industrial strength and mineral resources makes Tamboril one of the most economically stable places in the Cibao Valley.
