Slavonice Underground (Czech Republic)

Weather…

The Slavonice Underground is one of the oldest and best-preserved medieval drainage and cellar systems in Central Europe. The tunnels were hand-dug into gneiss rock starting in the 13th century, originally serving to drain the foundations of townhouses and as storage rooms for goods and food. Over the centuries, the system was expanded to a total length of approximately 1.5 kilometers, with passages often only 1.2 to 1.5 meters high and less than a meter wide. During wars and sieges, these tunnels served the city's citizens as secret escape routes and hiding places. Today, a part of the system is open to visitors, offering two different routes with varying levels of difficulty. Traversing the tunnels often requires rubber boots and protective clothing due to the extreme narrowness and low water levels, providing a fascinating insight into medieval engineering.
