České Budějovice, the administrative and cultural capital of the South Bohemian Region, was founded in 1265 by King Přemysl Ottokar II at the confluence of the Vltava and Malše rivers. The city is globally recognized for its long-standing brewing tradition, specifically as the home of the Budweiser Budvar brewery, which has been in operation since 1895. Its historic center is anchored by the Přemysl Otakar II Square, one of the largest rectangular squares in Europe, featuring the Baroque Samson Fountain and the 16th-century Black Tower. During the 19th century, the city became a pioneer in transportation with the opening of the horse-drawn railway to Linz in 1832, the first of its kind on the European continent. The square is surrounded by unique Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque houses with arcades that reflect the city's past wealth as a royal trade hub. Today, it remains a vital industrial center, focusing on food processing and the manufacture of high-quality writing instruments by the Koh-i-Noor Hardtmuth company.
