Zvíkov Castle, often referred to as the 'King of Czech Castles,' is spectacularly situated on a rocky promontory at the confluence of the Vltava and Otava rivers. Founded in the first half of the 13th century under King Přemysl Ottokar I, it was one of the most important royal residences of the Bohemian state. The architecture of the castle displays a transition from Romanesque to Gothic, with the massive 'Hláska' residential tower and the arcaded courtyard of the Royal Palace standing out. Valuable 15th-century medieval murals have been preserved in the St. Nicholas Chapel. Before Karlštejn Castle was completed, the walls of Zvíkov served as a secure storage place for the Bohemian coronation jewels. Despite severe damage from sieges and fires over the centuries, the core structure has remained, and the construction of the Orlík Dam in the 20th century permanently changed the castle's surroundings.

Visiting
Zvíkov Castle, known as the king of Czech castles, is open to visitors. The interior rooms with Gothic frescoes and the keep are accessible.
Typical hours
The castle is open seasonally, usually from April to October daily 9:00 to 17:00. In winter it is closed or accessible only by appointment.

Photography inside is allowed without flash; outside no restrictions. The position on the rock above the river confluence features spectacular panoramas.
Time needed
A walkthrough takes about 1 hour; allow extra time for the view from the castle wall. In total, allow 1.5 hours.
Combine with
Combine the visit with a boat trip on the Otava or Vltava river. The nearby Orlík Castle is also worth seeing.
Getting there
The castle is about 100 kilometers south of Prague, reachable by car via the D4 motorway then local roads. Parking is at the foot of the castle.
Insider tip
Visit the castle in the late afternoon when the light paints the rocks gold. A picnic by the river below the castle is highly recommended.
