Zwettl-Niederösterreich is located in the center of the Waldviertel and is the district capital of the district of the same name. The town is situated at the confluence of the Kamp and Zwettl rivers in a rugged but pleasant low mountain landscape. Geographically, the region is characterized by granite rock and dense forests. Historically, Zwettl was founded in the 12th century by the Kuenring family. The nearby Cistercian Zwettl Abbey is world-famous for its impressive cloisters and baroque tower. The architecture of the old town impresses with well-preserved facades, medieval town towers and an almost completely preserved city wall. Economically, the town is an important location for the food industry, in particular due to the Zwettl Brewery and the marketing of Waldviertel quality products. Demographically, Zwettl functions as a central hub for northwestern Lower Austria with important schools, hospitals and administrative offices. Cultural life is closely linked to religious traditions, music festivals at the abbey and regional craft markets. The climate is known as typically Waldviertel - cool, clear and refreshing.
