Lipno Dam (Czech Republic)

Weather…

The Lipno Dam, often referred to as the 'Bohemian Sea,' is the largest body of water in the Czech Republic by surface area. It was created between 1952 and 1959 by damming the Vltava River in the Šumava Mountains to provide flood protection and generate hydroelectric power via a unique underground power station. The reservoir stretches roughly 42 kilometers in length and reaches a width of up to 5 kilometers at its broadest point. Beyond its industrial functions, Lipno has evolved into South Bohemia's premier destination for year-round recreation, offering convenient conditions for sailing, windsurfing, and fishing. The surrounding area features an extensive network of cycling and hiking paths, while in winter, the frozen lake surface often hosts one of the world's longest natural ice-skating tracks. A major landmark nearby is the Treetop Walkway, which gives panoramic views of the reservoir and the lush forested landscapes of the Bohemian Forest.

📅
Best season
Summer is peak season for water sports, sailing, and swimming in the vast reservoir. Winter brings a completely different atmosphere, with frozen sections offering extensive natural ice skating and nearby skiing opportunities.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The shoreline varies from paved promenades and sandy beaches in tourist centers to dense forest trails further out. Cyclists and inline skaters will find an extensive network of flat, high-quality asphalt trails right by the water.
🎒
What to bring
Depending on the season, pack swimsuits and sunblock, or heavy winter clothing and ice skates. Bicycles or inline skates are highly recommended to fully enjoy the excellent lakefront trails spanning many kilometers.
