Battle of Ochomogo Site (Costa Rica)

Weather…

The Battle of Ochomogo, fought on April 5, 1823, was the first civil war in Costa Rican history and a pivotal event that shaped the nation's political landscape. Following independence from Spain, the country was split between the Imperialists of Cartago and Heredia, who favored joining the Mexican Empire under Agustín de Iturbide, and the Republicans of San José and Alajuela, who advocated for a fully independent republic. The confrontation took place at the Ochomogo Pass, a strategic high point between the cities of Cartago and San José at an elevation of 1540 meters. Republican forces, led by Gregorio José Ramírez, emerged victorious after a brief but intense engagement. This victory led to the permanent relocation of the capital from Cartago to San José, shifting the balance of power and laying the foundation for Costa Rica's democratic traditions. Today, a monument at the site commemorates the importance of national unity and peace, serving as a reminder of the historical struggle that defined the modern state.
