Ruins of Cartago (Costa Rica)

Weather…

The Ruins of the Santiago Apóstol Parish, often simply called the Ruins of Cartago, are one of the most iconic landmarks of Costa Rica's former capital. Contrary to popular belief, they are not the remains of a destroyed church, but rather a structure that was never completed due to repeated natural disasters. Construction of the current Romanesque-style structure began in the 1860s, but work was interrupted several times by severe earthquakes. The devastating Santa Monica earthquake on May 4, 1910, dealt the final blow to the project, after which construction was permanently abandoned. Today, only the massive stone outer walls and arches remain standing, enclosing a peaceful public garden. The ruins are surrounded by many legends, including stories of a curse that supposedly prevented the building's completion. As a historic monument, the site recalls the turbulent history of Cartago and now serves as a cultural space for both visitors and residents.
