Church of Our Lady of the Rosary
The Church of Our Lady of the Rosary, located in Cidade Velha on the island of Santiago, is widely considered the oldest colonial church in the world. Its construction began in 1495, shortly after the discovery of the islands, and it stands as a prime example of Manueline and Gothic architectural styles. The church is part of the Ribeira Grande historical site, which was the first European colonial outpost in the tropics and is now a UNESCO World Heritage site. Inside, the chapel of the Blessed Sacrament features intricate stone carvings and azulejos that reflect the wealth of the early settlement. Historically, the church served as the spiritual center for both Portuguese settlers and the enslaved populations brought from the African mainland. It has undergone several restorations over the centuries to preserve its structural integrity and unique artistic elements. As a landmark of global history, it documents the early phases of European expansion and the complex social dynamics of the transatlantic era. The building remains one of the few surviving examples of 15th-century religious architecture in the region.
