Ribeira Grande, formerly known as Povoação, is the historical and administrative heart of northern Santo Antão Island. The city is dramatically situated at the confluence of two deep river valleys, Ribeira Grande and Ribeira da Torre, right on the rugged northern coast. Due to its geographic position, the town is frequently battered by powerful Atlantic swells, necessitating massive sea walls for coastal protection. The architecture of Ribeira Grande is characterized by 19th-century colonial buildings, narrow cobblestone streets, and the prominent Church of Nossa Senhora do Rosário. As the region's main commercial hub, the city serves as a gathering point for agricultural products from the surrounding fertile valleys, notably sugarcane, coffee, and citrus fruits. Until the mid-20th century, it was the island's primary settlement before Porto Novo's port development shifted the economic focus. Today, it remains a favorite base for hikers exploring the steep mountain trails of the nearby volcanic massifs.
