Gwaii Haanas Marine Life (Canada)

Weather…

The Gwaii Haanas National Park Reserve at the southern tip of Haida Gwaii hosts exceptional marine biodiversity. The region is often referred to as the "Galapagos of the North" due to its isolation and the presence of numerous endemic species and vast kelp forests. In these nutrient-rich waters, large numbers of Steller sea lions, humpback whales, orcas, and sea otters thrive. Particularly noteworthy are the deep-water coral and sponge reefs that flourish in the cool Pacific waters, providing habitats for rare fish species. The protected area is managed jointly by the Canadian government and the Haida Nation to preserve the delicate balance between culture and nature. Gwaii Haanas encompasses not only the marine environment but also the remains of historical Haida villages, which are now designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
