Namibe Partial Reserve (Angola)

Weather…

The Namibe Partial Reserve is located in southwestern Angola in the province of the same name and was established on November 7, 1957. It covers an area of approximately 4,450 square kilometers and forms a transition zone between the Namib Desert and the adjacent highlands. The reserve is famous for its unique flora, particularly the Welwitschia mirabilis, a centuries-old desert plant that only grows in this region. The fauna includes species adapted to aridity, such as the oryx, springbok, ostriches, and occasionally desert elephants. Geographically, the area is characterized by vast gravel plains, sandy dunes, and rugged rock formations. The reserve serves as an important ecosystem for preserving biodiversity under extreme climatic conditions.

📋 Practical info

📅
Best season
The cooler period from May to September is most comfortable for desert hikes and coastal fauna observation. During these months, temperatures are more bearable and animals are more active.
🌅
Best time of day
Early morning shortly after sunrise is when animals are most active, before the day's heat sets in. Late afternoon you can also spot desert dwellers such as oryx antelopes and jackals.
📜
Etiquette
Do not leave marked roads to avoid damaging the fragile desert crust. Do not feed animals - the desert food chain is fragile and human food harms them.
🎒
What to bring
Sun protection, a wide-brimmed hat, and plenty of water (at least 3 liters per person) are essential. Light, long-sleeved clothing protects against sun and insects.
🧭
Getting there
The reserve is south of Namibe and reachable via the coastal road. The last kilometers are on sandy tracks, which require four-wheel drive.
🦌
What to expect
Desert animals are widely scattered and often well-camouflaged - don't expect to see many at once. Take your time and carefully observe the surroundings, especially tracks in the sand.
