Common Wall Lizard on Stone Walls (Andorra)

Weather…

The Common Wall Lizard (Podarcis muralis) is a ubiquitous sight across Andorra, finding a great sanctuary in the country's extensive network of traditional dry-stone walls. These stone structures act as solar heaters, absorbing warmth during the day which the lizards use to regulate their body temperature. Highly agile and alert, these lizards are often seen darting across vertical surfaces in search of ants, spiders, and other small invertebrates. A fascinating biological trait is their ability to self-amputate their tail (autotomy) to escape a predator's grasp; the detached tail wiggles to distract the attacker while the lizard escapes into a narrow crevice. Their skin patterns, usually a mix of brown, grey, and green, provide excellent camouflage against the rugged Pyrenean rocks. In Andorra la Vella and surrounding areas, these lizards are valued for their role in controlling insect populations in public parks and private gardens alike.

📋 Practical info

📅
Best season
The common wall lizard is active in Andorra from spring to autumn, most frequently from April to September. During summer months, especially on warm days, they bask on stone walls and rocks. In early spring and late autumn they are less active in cooler weather.
🌅
Best time of day
The best time to see wall lizards is in the morning when they warm up after the cool night. Late morning and early afternoon are also good basking periods. In the midday heat they often retreat to shady crevices.
📜
Etiquette
Do not handle the lizards - their tails can break off and they become stressed. Observe from a distance and avoid sudden movements. Do not damage stone walls as they are vital habitats.
🎒
What to bring
Binoculars with good close focus help see the fine scales and colour patterns. Comfortable, non-slip footwear is important for moving safely on uneven stone walls and rocks.
🧭
Getting there
Wall lizards are found throughout Andorra on sunny stone walls along roads, paths and buildings. Particularly good spots are dry stone walls in villages like Ordino or La Massana. No special access routes are needed.
🦌
What to expect
Though common, the lizards are timid - remain still to let them reappear. Often it’s enough to spend a few minutes by a sunny wall and wait patiently.
