The Riu Valira is the primary river system of Andorra and decisively shapes the geographical landscape of the country. It is formed by the confluence of the Valira del Nord and the Valira d'Orient near Escaldes-Engordany and flows as the Gran Valira through the capital, Andorra la Vella, heading south towards Spain. Over recent decades, the riverbanks have undergone intensive urban development, resulting in numerous promenades and pedestrian bridges that integrate the watercourse into urban life. Historically, the river was a vital resource for agriculture and early industry, particularly for textile and iron processing. Today, it is mainly used for water supply and hydroelectric power generation via small-scale plants. The water quality of the Valira has improved significantly thanks to modern treatment facilities, allowing for the return of native fish species like the brown trout. In urban sections, the riverbed acts as a crucial corridor for fresh air circulation within the narrow valley. Despite extensive embankment, remnants of original riparian vegetation can still be found along its banks.
