Guelma is a significant historical and administrative center located in northeastern Algeria, situated in the fertile valley of the Seybouse River. The city's history stretches back to antiquity when it was known as Calama, serving as a vital Phoenician outpost before becoming a prosperous Roman colony in the province of Numidia. Today, Guelma is internationally recognized for its remarkably preserved Roman theater, which dates back to the 3rd century and could originally accommodate approximately 4,500 spectators. Another major attraction is the Hammam Meskhoutine, a complex of natural thermal springs where the water reaches temperatures of up to 97 degrees Celsius, forming unique limestone cascades. The surrounding region is a primary agricultural zone, specifically known for the large-scale production of tomatoes and various cereal crops. Guelma also serves as an industrial hub for ceramics and food processing, maintaining its role as a strategic crossroad between the coastal cities and the inland highlands.
