Located on the Mediterranean coast in northeastern Algeria, Skikda is a strategic port city with a rich history dating back to Phoenician times. Known in antiquity as Rusicade, the city flourished under Roman rule and still features one of the largest ancient theaters in North Africa. After centuries of change, the modern city was revitalized by the French in 1838 as Philippeville, developing into a major maritime gateway. Today, Skikda is the heart of Algeria's petrochemical industry, hosting massive refineries and one of the largest natural gas plants in the world. Beyond industry, the region is famous for its photogenic beaches along the Gulf of Stora and its fertile plains where the famous Skikda strawberries thrive. The city successfully blends its ancient heritage with its role as a modern economic engine, offering visitors both historical sites and a spirited coastal atmosphere.
