Annaba, historically known as Hippo Regius, is located in the far northeast of Algeria along the Mediterranean coast, near the Tunisian border. As one of the country's oldest cities, it was founded by Phoenicians in the 12th century BC and later flourished as a significant Roman center. The city gained global prominence in the 4th and 5th centuries AD as the seat of Saint Augustine, who served as bishop here and authored some of his most influential works before his death in 430 AD. The Basilica of Saint Augustine, built in the 19th century on a hill overlooking the ancient ruins, stands as a testament to this religious heritage. During the French colonial period, the city was renamed Bône and evolved into one of North Africa's most important shipping ports. Modern Annaba is a powerhouse of Algerian industry, anchored by the El-Hadjar steel complex, the largest in Africa. Beyond its industrial role, the city attracts visitors with its extensive sandy beaches and the scenic Edough Mountains, blending historical depth with modern economic vitality.
