The Port of Houston is a 25-mile-long complex of public and private facilities located near Houston, Texas. It is the busiest port in the United States in terms of foreign tonnage and the second-busiest in terms of overall tonnage. Opened in 1914, the port was made possible by the dredging and widening of Buffalo Bayou and Galveston Bay to create the Houston Ship Channel. This channel allows large, ocean-going vessels to reach the inland hub of Houston. The port is an indispensable part of the Texas economy and a top center for the petrochemical industry. The complex is the largest petrochemical manufacturing complex in the world, handling a significant portion of the nation's production of gasoline, fuel oil, and kerosene. In addition to oil and gas, the port is a major handler of containers, general cargo, and project cargo. The ongoing Houston Ship Channel Expansion Project, Project 11, will widen and deepen the channel to enhance safety and accommodate larger vessels, further cementing its position as a vital global trade hub.
