Chisos Mountains
The Chisos Mountains are a striking range located in the heart of Big Bend National Park in West Texas. They hold the distinction of being the only mountain range in the United States contained entirely within a single national park's boundaries. The mountains were formed by volcanic activity during the Cenozoic Era, approximately 35 to 44 million years ago, and are characterized by rugged peaks, deep canyons, and high basins like the Chisos Basin. The highest point is Emory Peak, reaching 2,385 meters. The Chisos Mountains serve as a biological island in the middle of the Chihuahuan Desert, hosting relict forests of oak, pine, and juniper that date back to cooler geological epochs. Wildlife is equally diverse, featuring mountain lions, black bears, and over 450 species of birds. Historically, the area was utilized by various indigenous groups and later by Mexican settlers. Today, the Chisos Mountains are a premier destination for hikers and nature enthusiasts seeking dramatic landscapes and the profound silence of the remote Texas wilderness.
