Katwijk Plantation (Suriname)

Weather…

Katwijk Plantation is a historic coffee estate in the Commewijne District, notable for its remarkable continuity in agricultural production. Founded in 1746, it is one of the few plantations in Suriname where coffee is still grown and processed to this day. Situated picturesquely along the banks of the Commewijne River, the estate retains much of its original colonial character. In the 19th century, following the abolition of slavery, the plantation owners transitioned to indentured labor, leading to the arrival of Javanese workers whose cultural influence remains evident in the local community today. The architecture on the grounds includes traditional wooden residential buildings and an operational coffee factory, where some vintage machinery is still utilized. Katwijk is not only an active commercial enterprise but also a significant cultural heritage site that demonstrates the entire coffee-making process, from harvest to roasting, to visitors. Its survival as an operating estate for over 270 years makes Katwijk a living testament to Suriname's agrarian history.
