Peperpot Plantation (Suriname)

Weather…

Peperpot Plantation, located on the right bank of the Commewijne River, is one of the oldest and most renowned plantations in Suriname. It was established at the beginning of the 18th century, around 1702, by Simon Pelgrom and remained in operation for nearly three centuries. Originally focused on tobacco and sugarcane, Peperpot later successfully transitioned to coffee and cocoa production. The plantation witnessed significant social shifts, from the era of slavery to the arrival of Javanese indentured laborers in the late 19th century, whose descendants still form a community in the vicinity. Although commercial production ceased in 1998, the historic structures, including the plantation house, coffee factory, and drying sheds, have been preserved as heritage sites. Today, the area has been transformed into the Peperpot Nature Forest, a protected nature reserve that balances biodiversity conservation with the preservation of colonial history. Visitors can hike through the reclaimed jungle trails to spot monkeys, sloths, and a wide variety of tropical birds amidst the remnants of the plantation's past.
