Clevia Plantation (Suriname)

Weather…

Clevia Plantation, situated in the northeast of Paramaribo, has a diverse history that dates back to the mid-18th century. Originally established as a coffee and cocoa plantation, it served for generations as a site of colonial economic production. Following the abolition of slavery in 1863, the plantation owners sought new labor sources, leading to the arrival of many indentured laborers from India and later Indonesia. This influx of migrants profoundly shaped the demographic and cultural landscape of the surrounding area. Throughout the 20th century, the plantation gradually lost its agricultural prominence, and parts of its territory were eventually absorbed into the urban expansion of Paramaribo. Today, a section of the former estate is known as Clevia Park, a site that blends recreation with educational outreach. The park showcases traditional farming techniques and Suriname's rich botanical diversity while honoring the historical significance of the land. The transformation from a site of forced labor into a public space for education and nature appreciation reflects the broader social changes in Surinamese society.
