Yambio Coffee Plantations (South Sudan)

Weather…

Yambio Coffee Plantations represent a significant agricultural sector in South Sudan's Western Equatoria state, producing primarily Arabica coffee. Established in the 1920s, the plantations cover approximately 15,000 hectares with an annual output of around 600 metric tons of green coffee. Most farms are smallholdings averaging 1.2 hectares, operated by over 12,000 families. The coffee is shade-grown under indigenous trees, which enhances biodiversity and soil conservation. After harvest, processing is done via wet mills with fermentation tanks and sun-drying tables. In 2021, Yambio coffee won a Specialty Coffee Association rating of 82 points. Challenges include inadequate infrastructure, limited access to credit, and political instability; however, international partnerships aim to boost production to 2,000 tons by 2030.
