Nzara Agro-Industrial Complex (South Sudan)

Weather…

The Nzara Agro-Industrial Complex, historically part of the Zande Scheme, was once the industrial hub of southern Sudan. Located in Western Equatoria State, it was established in the late 1940s with the aim of creating a self-sufficient economy in the region. The complex featured cotton ginneries, textile mills, and factories for producing soap, edible oils, and sugar. Nzara was regarded as a pioneer model for integrated rural development, where local farmers provided the raw materials for industrial processing. However, due to successive civil wars, the facilities were repeatedly destroyed and looted, resulting in a total economic collapse. In recent years, there have been attempts to revive parts of the complex, particularly sugar and oil production units. Today, it remains a symbol of South Sudan's industrial heritage and the untapped economic potential of the fertile equatorial belt.
