Cheomseongdae Observatory (South Korea)

Weather…

The Cheomseongdae Observatory in Gyeongju is the oldest surviving astronomical observatory in East Asia and a prominent symbol of the scientific achievements of the Silla Kingdom. Constructed in the 7th century during the reign of Queen Seondeok, the tower was used to observe stars and celestial events to determine auspicious times for agricultural activities and state ceremonies. The structure's unique bottle-like shape incorporates sophisticated mathematical and symbolic designs. It consists of exactly 362 stone blocks, corresponding to the days of the lunar year, and is arranged in 27 horizontal layers, signifying Queen Seondeok's position as the 27th ruler of Silla. Standing approximately 9.17 meters tall, the observatory has remained largely intact for over 1,300 years, demonstrating the incredible durability and precision of ancient Korean stonemasonry. Cheomseongdae is officially designated as National Treasure No. 31 of South Korea and remains a focal point of the Gyeongju Historic Areas. At night, the monument is beautifully illuminated, highlighting its enduring architectural elegance within the ancient capital.
