What is this place?
The Koidu Diamond Mine is the largest diamond mine in Sierra Leone, producing high-quality gemstones from kimberlite pipes. It plays a significant role in Sierra Leone's economy, creating jobs and generating foreign exchange through rough diamond exports.
Visiting
The mine is an active, secured excavation site not open to the public. There are no regular visiting opportunities, as security and operational procedures do not allow it.
Where to view it
From the main road passing the mine, the waste dumps and access road to the pit are visible. A better view is from the hill east of Koidu, from which part of the open-pit mine can be distinguished.
Local products
Diamonds are the main product, but they are sold in rough form, not processed on site. In the Koidu region, local markets offer handmade silver and copper jewelry, traditional batik fabrics, and agricultural products like rice and cassava.

Diamond mining takes place year-round, with the dry season from November to April offering the best accessibility for heavy machinery. During the rainy season (May to October), production may be limited due to flooding and poor road conditions.
