Viminacium was a major Roman city and the military camp of the Legio VII Claudia, functioning as the capital of the Moesia Superior province. The archaeological site is located near present-day Kostolac, approximately 12 kilometers from Požarevac. During its peak in the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD, Viminacium was a thriving metropolis with an estimated population of 40,000, holding the status of a municipium and later a colony. Excavations have revealed remarkable structures, including an amphitheater, public baths, an extensive aqueduct, and necropolises containing over 14.000 tombs. A truly unique feature of the site is the discovery of mammoth skeletons, notably the nearly intact remains of 'Vika', housed in a dedicated Mammoth Park. Today, Viminacium operates as a state-of-the-art archaeological park featuring a reconstructed Roman Domus. It stands as one of the most important testimonies to Roman civilization in the Balkans.

Visiting
The Viminacium archaeological site is open to visitors and features insight into Roman urban life. The remains of the city walls, amphitheater, and baths are freely accessible, and the museum is also open.
Typical hours
The site is typically open daily from 9 AM to 5 PM, often longer in the summer months. The museum has similar opening hours, and checking before your visit is recommended.
Photography
Photography is allowed throughout the outdoor area for personal use. In the museum, photography may be restricted, especially during special exhibitions, and flash is usually prohibited.
Time needed
Allow at least two to three hours for a thorough walk around the site and through the museum. For archaeology enthusiasts, a full day may be worthwhile to capture all the details.

Viminacium is located near Požarevac, which has a visit to the city museum or the house of Miloš Obrenović. The Danube is also not far away and invites a walk.
Getting there
The site is easily accessible by car from Požarevac via the main road, with parking available on site. Public buses run from Požarevac, with the stop about a 15-minute walk away.
Insider tip
Wear comfortable shoes, as the site is extensive and you will do a lot of walking. Bring water and sun protection, as there is little shade.
