Neamț Citadel
The Neamț Citadel is a medieval fortress located near Târgu Neamț, standing as one of Moldavia's most significant defensive structures. It was established at the end of the 14th century by Prince Petru I Mușat and significantly expanded and strengthened by Stephen the Great in the 15th century to withstand modern artillery. Situated atop the Culmea Pleșului peak at an altitude of 480 meters, the fortress offered a commanding strategic view of the Moldova River valley. Throughout its history, it resisted numerous sieges, most notably the 1476 assault by Ottoman Sultan Mehmed II and the 1691 attack by Polish King John III Sobieski. The architectural layout features massive river stone walls, deep defensive trenches, and an impressive arched bridge supported by stone pillars leading to the main gate. Following a period of decline in the 18th century when it was partially dismantled by Ottoman decree, the citadel underwent extensive restoration in the 20th century. Today, it functions as a museum showcasing medieval weaponry, armor, living quarters, and the rich historical legacy of the Moldavian Principality.
