The European bison (Bison bonasus), also known as the wisent, is the heaviest and largest land mammal in Europe, a true survivor of the Ice Age. Extinct in the wild in Romania by the late 18th century, the species was reintroduced starting in 1958, initially in reserves and more recently into the wild. Today, free-roaming herds can be found in areas such as Vânători-Neamț, the Țarcu Mountains, and Hațeg. An adult bull can weigh up to 1,000 kg and stand nearly two meters tall at the shoulder.
