Sighișoara Citadel (Romania)

Weather…

The Sighișoara Citadel is one of the few remaining inhabited medieval fortresses in Europe and has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1999. Founded in the 12th century by Saxon settlers on a hill overlooking the Târnava Mare River, it served as a vital strategic and commercial center. The fortification is enclosed by a wall nearly one kilometer long, originally featuring 14 defensive towers, nine of which are still standing today. Each tower was named after and defended by one of the town's craft guilds, such as the Tailors' Tower or the Tanners' Tower. The city's primary landmark is the 64-meter-high Clock Tower, which formerly served as the town hall and now houses a history museum. Within the citadel's winding alleys stands the birthplace of Vlad the Impaler, the historical figure behind the Dracula legend. Another highlight is the Covered Scholars' Stairs, built in 1642, which leads up to the Church on the Hill, a magnificent Gothic structure at the summit. Every July, the Medieval Festival transforms the town into a lively stage for knightly tournaments, crafts, and music.
