Bear Lake (Romania)

Weather…

Bear Lake (Lacul Ursu) in Sovata is the world's largest heliothermal lake and a unique natural monument in the heart of Transylvania. It was formed on May 27, 1875, following the collapse of a salt massif caused by torrential rains, which created a sinkhole that eventually filled with water. The phenomenon of heliothermy occurs due to the stratification of water: a thin layer of freshwater on the surface acts as a thermal insulator, trapping the sun's heat in the dense, saline layers below. This allows the deeper waters to reach temperatures exceeding 30-40 degrees Celsius in the summer. The lake spans approximately 4 hectares and reaches a depth of 18 meters. It is named after its unique shape, which resembles a spread-out bear skin. For over a century, the lake has been a prestigious spa destination, famous for its mineral-rich mud and saline waters used to treat rheumatic and gynecological conditions. Strict conservation measures, including scheduled bathing breaks, are enforced to preserve its delicate thermal balance.
