Red Lake (Romania)

Weather…

Red Lake (Lacul Roșu) is the largest natural dam lake in Romania, located in the Eastern Carpathians at the foot of the Hășmaș Mountains. It was created in 1837 when a massive landslide from Mount Ucigașul, triggered by heavy rainfall and an earthquake, blocked the path of the Bicaz River. The landslide flooded a pine forest, and to this day, the calcified trunks of the submerged trees protrude from the water's surface, creating a unique and eerie landscape. Its name derives from the reddish iron-rich sediments washed down from the surrounding mountains, which can tint the water under certain light conditions. The lake sits at an altitude of 983 meters and spans roughly 11 hectares, with a depth that has significantly decreased over time due to alluviation. It is a key geological and geomorphological site within the Cheile Bicazului-Hășmaș National Park, situated right at the entrance to the famous Bicaz Gorges. Local legends and its scientific importance make it one of the most visited natural sites in the region.

Located in the Eastern Carpathians, this naturally dammed lake is easily accessible by car or bus via the scenic winding road of the Bicaz Gorge, making it a highly popular stop for road-tripping tourists.
📅
Best season
Summer represents the peak season for outdoor activities and boat rentals, while late autumn provides a quieter atmosphere accompanied by spectacular foliage colors reflecting beautifully on the water surface.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The immediate shoreline paths are relatively flat and clearly marked for casual strolling, but the surrounding trails leading into the forested mountains feature steep, rocky, and sometimes muddy conditions.
🎒
What to bring
Casual visitors require only comfortable sneakers for the main paved areas, but anyone planning to hike the nearby mountain ridges should pack proper hiking boots, trekking poles, and adequate rain protection.
🅿️
Parking
Several organized, paid parking lots are situated directly next to the commercial hub of the lake, though finding an available spot can be quite challenging on weekends and public holidays during the summer.
⚠️
Safety
Caution is advised when renting boats due to the submerged, petrified tree trunks hidden beneath the surface, and hikers should remain vigilant regarding potential wildlife encounters in the surrounding dense forests.
⏱️
Time needed
A brief scenic stop taking pictures might last only an hour, but fully experiencing the area with a boat ride, a local meal, and a hike around the perimeter generally requires at least half a day of exploration.
