Praid Salt Mine (Romania)

Weather…

The Praid Salt Mine (Salina Praid), located in Harghita County, is one of the largest salt reserves in Europe and a major center for speleotherapy. The salt formation dates back to the Miocene epoch and is estimated to contain 2.7 billion tons of salt. Organized mining began in the 18th century under Austrian administration, creating vast underground galleries. Today, the tourist area is located at a depth of 120 meters and is accessed via a 1.5-kilometer tunnel through which buses transport visitors. The massive halls feature ceilings up to 16 meters high and offer extensive facilities, including playgrounds, an ecumenical chapel, a 3D cinema, and a winery. The air's high saline concentration is particularly effective in treating asthma and chronic bronchitis. On the surface, the mine also supports a saltwater swimming pool, which is highly popular during the summer for its therapeutic properties regarding rheumatic conditions. Important current notice: In May 2025, the Corund Brook broke into the mine and flooded the tourist galleries; the salt mine has been closed indefinitely to visitors since then, and rehabilitation work is ongoing.
