Olteț Gorges (Romania)

Weather…

The Olteț Gorges (Cheile Oltețului) are situated in Gorj County, near the Polovragi commune, separating the Căpățânii Mountains from the Parâng Mountains. They are widely regarded as some of the narrowest gorges in Europe, with the vertical limestone walls standing just a few meters apart in certain sections. The Olteț River carved this spectacular 2-kilometer passage through Jurassic limestone over millennia. The cliffs rise up to 100 meters high and house several caves, including the famous Polovragi Cave, located at the entrance of the gorge. The road winding through the canyon features sweeping views of the raw rock formations and the river's rushing waters. Geologically, the area is rich in karst phenomena and provides a habitat for rare alpine flora and birds of prey. The Olteț Gorges are a protected natural monument and a favored destination for hikers, climbers, and photographers seeking the rugged, untouched beauty of the Southern Carpathians.
