Small Brăila Island Natural Park

The Small Brăila Island Natural Park is a protected area situated in the Danube floodplain in southeastern Romania, covering approximately 17,529 hectares. It represents one of the last remaining natural wetland ecosystems on the lower Danube after the massive drainage projects that transformed the Great Brăila Island into agricultural land. The park consists of a complex of seven islands separated by Danube branches and was designated as a Ramsar site of international importance in 2001. It serves as a vital habitat for over 200 bird species, including the white-tailed eagle, various herons, and egrets. The hydrological regime of the park is directly influenced by the Danube's water levels, creating temporary lakes and marshes that sustain a high level of biodiversity. Scientific research in the area focuses on wetland restoration and the natural evolution of riverine ecosystems. Access for visitors is primarily by boat, ensuring the preservation of its wild character and minimizing human impact on the wildlife.
