Maria Filotti Theatre (Romania)

Weather…

The Maria Filotti Theatre in Brăila is one of Romania's most prestigious architectural monuments and a cornerstone of cultural life in the Danube port city. Completed in 1896, the building was designed in an eclectic style with strong neoclassical influences by the architect Nicogos Tataru. Originally known as the 'Rally Theatre', it was built to host theatrical performances, concerts, and grand balls for the city's wealthy merchant class. Since 1969, it has been named after the legendary Romanian actress Maria Filotti, who performed extensively on its stage. The interior is lavishly decorated with gilded ornaments, red velvet upholstery, and crystal chandeliers, boasting some of the best acoustics in the country. Following an extensive restoration between 1980 and 1988, the building was returned to its original nineteenth-century splendor. Today, it remains an active cultural institution, home to a professional theatre company and the host of the world-renowned 'Hariclea Darclée' International Voice Competition.
