Lake Amara is a natural salt lake located in the Bărăgan Plain, roughly seven kilometers from the city of Slobozia. Formed in an abandoned meander of the Ialomița River, it is internationally renowned for its sapropelic mud and highly mineralized waters. The therapeutic properties of the lake were first scientifically analyzed in the late 19th century, leading to the establishment of a formal health resort in 1887. The water has high concentrations of sulfates, magnesium, and sodium, making it particularly effective for treating rheumatic and neurological conditions. Covering an area of approximately 132 hectares, the lake is surrounded by a forested park that provides a unique and soothing microclimate. Every year, thousands of visitors flock to its sanatoriums and beaches to experience the benefits of these natural remedies. Beyond its medical value, the lake is an essential ecosystem for various bird species native to the steppe region.
