Ponor Fortresses (Cave) (Romania)

Weather…

The Ponor Fortresses (Cetățile Ponorului) in the Apuseni Mountains are regarded as the most impressive karst phenomenon in Romania and Southeastern Europe. The site comprises three massive sinkholes (dolines), with the deepest reaching 190 meters, connected by a vast underground cave system. Its main entrance is a monumental stone portal, 74 meters high, which serves as the entry point for an active underground river. This river flows through a gallery over 2 kilometers long, creating a series of subterranean lakes and cascades. Geologically, the 'fortresses' represent the collapsed remains of an ancient cave ceiling, sculpted over millennia by water erosion. As a core part of the Apuseni Natural Park, the area is strictly protected; traversing the rugged and wet terrain of the caves is generally recommended only for experienced hikers and speleologists.
