Doctor Juan León Mallorquín, a town in the Alto Paraná Department of eastern Paraguay, lies about 50 kilometres west of Ciudad del Este along Route 7 and is regarded as one of the most important timber and soybean processing centres in the region. It was founded in 1947 and named after the Paraguayan doctor and politician Juan León Mallorquín, who played a significant role in the country's public life. The town grew rapidly through the state colonisation policy of the 1960s and 1970s, when Brazilian and German immigrants settled the area and cleared the Atlantic Forest. With around 25 000 inhabitants Mallorquín today relies mainly on forestry, sawmills, soybean and maize farming and logistics. The economic situation has stabilised in recent years thanks to a successful transition from timber-based to intensive agricultural production. Notable sights include the modern parish church, the Mercado Municipal and the regional cooperative headquarters along Route 7.
