San Alberto, a town in the Alto Paraná Department of eastern Paraguay, lies about 80 kilometres north of Ciudad del Este in a fertile agricultural region dominated by soybean, maize and wheat farming. It was founded in 1973 under the Stroessner government's state colonisation policy, which directed Brazilian and Mennonite immigrants into the former Atlantic Forest area to develop the region agriculturally. With around 35 000 inhabitants, a large share of whom speak Portuguese, San Alberto is a typical Brasiguayo centre with a pronounced Brazilian culture, architecture and way of life. Economically the town relies on soybean and maize farming, grain production, cattle ranching and logistics. It is home to several large cooperatives, soybean mills and machinery dealerships that form the backbone of the local economy. Notable sights include the modern Catholic parish church and the Mercado Municipal offering Brazilian specialities and typical South American products.
