La Flor Wildlife Refuge (Nicaragua)

Weather…

The La Flor Wildlife Refuge is located on Nicaragua's Pacific coast, about 20 kilometers south of San Juan del Sur, and is globally recognized as one of the most important nesting sites for sea turtles. The approximately 800-hectare protected area includes a pristine stretch of beach where, between July and January, the spectacular natural phenomenon known as the 'arribada' takes place. During these mass arrivals, tens of thousands of Olive Ridley turtles (Lepidochelys olivacea) come ashore simultaneously to lay their eggs in the sand. Historically, the area was declared a nature reserve in 1996 to halt the widespread theft of turtle eggs and the decline of turtle populations. Beach surveillance is now often conducted with the involvement of the Nicaraguan army and local conservation organizations to protect nests from predators and poachers. In addition to turtles, the refuge provides habitat for howler monkeys, iguanas, and numerous migratory birds within the adjacent dry forests and mangroves. For scientists and visitors, La Flor gives a unique opportunity to witness the life cycle of these ancient marine reptiles in a controlled and protected environment.
