Xalteva Church
The Xalteva Church in Granada is one of Nicaragua's most historic religious structures, originally built on the site of a pre-Columbian indigenous settlement also named Xalteva. This location holds deep symbolic value, representing the convergence of Spanish colonial influence and native heritage. The church has endured a tumultuous history, suffering extensive damage during pirate raids in the 17th century and near-total destruction during the 1856 burning of Granada by the American filibuster William Walker. The current edifice is the result of significant reconstruction efforts in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, resulting in its striking neoclassical facade, distinctive twin towers, and an elegant central dome. Inside, the church features a spacious and bright nave adorned with religious art and historic altarpieces that survived the city's various conflicts. The plaza in front of the church serves as a vital community hub for the Xalteva neighborhood and a key site for traditional religious processions. As a cornerstone of Granada's historic district, the Xalteva Church stands as a testament to the city's enduring spirit and architectural resilience throughout centuries of hardship.
